every picture tells a story.  the beauty of phone photography is that you always have your camera with you…you always have a way to capture the moment.  these moments are just a quarter of a second, but they capture life.  these are the pictures that may or may not be the best i took throughout the year, but tell a story.
i really tried to do a top seven for this, but i just couldn’t narrow it down, so here it is:
top seven ten instagram pics of ele7en:
|ten|
prayer_malenovice, czech republic
every morning during our trainings at malenovice we set aside time for the students to go and pray…to connect to their Lord.  i love that some are lying down, some are journaling, some are alone, some are in little groups, but all are connecting to the one who saved them and sustains them.

|nine|                                                                                                                                                                       the pretty one_berlin, germany
how could i not include a picture of this beauty?! we went to berlin the day before our first group of us teams arrived to get a day to relax and be together.  we biked through the city, ate great food, and culminated the trip by seeing death cab for cutie.  a perfect day for us before the insanity of the summer began!

|eight|                                                                                                                                                                   baby boy hughes’ room_cesky tesin
in a few short days our boy will make his appearance! setting up his room and preparing came early for us since we’re in the states for his birth.  we love the simplicity of this room and how much joy is going to be brought here!

|se7en|                                                                                                                                                              rails_la jolla
we sat on park bench as the day slowly drifted away. people passed. waves crashed. the sun departed.

|six|                                                                                                                                                                    wrong turn_middle of nowhere, czech republic
emily made a wrong turn as we were driving back from prague one day.  the result was this beautiful little country road.  good move, babe!

|five|                                                                                                                                                                        the square_cesky tesin, czech republic
when i first moved to czech i dreamed of living on the town square.  over six years later, when our landlord said we had to move, i never thought we’d actually end up in a place with this view!

|four|                                                                                                                                                      islands_sveta petar, croatia
this was the view from our balcony on our vacation with emily’s parents! the croatian coast is filled with bumps of land sticking up from the water. we woke up to this every day.

|three|                                                                                                                                                    roses_prague
wenseslas square.  one of the most iconic places in all of prague.  this spring day the clouds were particularly beautiful, but what really gets me is the subtleness of the roses at the bottom of the frame.

|two|                                                                                                                                                                        the tree_vojkovice, czech republic
i’ve driven by this tree anywhere from five to ten times a week for the past six years.  i love it. i’ve dreamed of photographing it.  the problem is that its right off the freeway, set in the middle of someone’s field.  there are no side roads anywhere near it.  so for six years, i’ve driven past it longingly.    one morning as i sat in the passenger’s seat on our way to the office, i captured that elusive tree.  this is the result.

|one|                                                                                                                                                          stumps_lux coffee, phoenix
every once in a while the moment happens where the lighting is perfect and illuminates something that is otherwise ordinary.  that is the beauty of photography at its best: when something ordinary or even ugly is made beautiful by someone capturing a moment.  this was my moment.

so, this will be my final top ten of 10…time to stop looking back and start looking forward.  but, before then, here it is

top ten_iphone apps

ten | espn

this is my go to for sports info when i’m not around my computer.  all too often do i check this app first thing when i wake up to see who won the games while i was sleeping.  easy interface and i love that i can choose my favorite teams and have them all located on the front page.

price: free

nine | my fantasy teams (free)

depending on the time of year and how poor my real teams are doing, i very well may pick this app as the first thing i check in the morning.  i love that i can track all my fantasy teams in one place.

price: free

eight | czech-english dictionary

not all of these apps are “cool”.   these are just my favorite/most used.  and this little pocket dictionary helps me to survive in czech and has saved me more than once!

price: $1.99

seven | currency

you can definitely tell a missionary by their most used apps.  its interesting to live in a place where your salary changes daily! this is a simple app, but i check it almost daily…especially towards the beginning of the month when i pull out my money! :)

price: free

six | esv bible

i don’t use this app a ton (i still haven’t gotten to a place where i like to read digitally), but it has one of the slickest, simplest designs of any app i have.  very clean, clear and easy to use.  my favorite way to use it is to favorite verses that i’m memorizing.  say goodbye to index cards!

price: free

five | imdb

i’m an information junkie.  just ask em.  i google everything.  one of my favorite things to look up are movies, actors, directors, etc.  why use google for that, when there is imdb?  when i found this app, i was overjoyed.  now, i can search for actors while lying on my couch!

price: free

four | evernote

i learned about evernote from carlos whitaker’s digital toolbox blog only a few days ago, but it is already changing my life.  i take notes all the time and sometimes when i don’t have anything to take notes with i lose the thought.  the other problem is that i often have notes all over the place…on paper, in notes on my phone or in my comp, in my journal, etc.  but, evernote syncs all your notes in one place and allows you to link pictures, websites, written notes, and voice memos.  it has taken my note-taking to another level!

price: free

three | instagram

this is another app that i learned about from loswhit.  emily and i both have been taking a ton of photos with this over the first few days of us using it.  i love the simplicity of being able to post it to facebook and twitter and that it locates where the photos is taken using gps tracking.  the filters are really simple, but the best aspect is the community of other users.

two | lose it!

i downloaded this app almost two years ago.  at the time i was just returning from the states after a home stay and i was pushing 190 pounds.  i wasn’t necessarily looking to lose weight, but when i heard about this app i thought i’d try it.

the app is simply a calorie counter.  you enter some basic information about yourself: height, weight, age, goal weight, and when you want to reach that weight, and based on those factors it creates a daily calorie limit.  it then has a database of thousands of foods and their nutrition information as well as exercise and their calories burned per/hour.  your responsibility is to just log all the food you eat as well as any exercise you do and make sure you don’t exceed your max calorie limit for each day.

since i started lose it i have lost almost 20 pounds!

see that really low dip? yep, that was when em and i did our detox.

it is quite exhausting to track everything, but well worth it.  i promised myself that once i hit my goal, then i would only track my weight and if it then breeched my goal weight again, then i’d go back to tracking.

more than anything it makes you aware of what and how much you are eating and how it affects your weight.

one | angry birds & angry birds holiday

this is absolutely the most addicting game.  so simple in concept, yet so creative in gameplay.  they keep coming out with more and more levels, which leaves us fans loving the game more and more.  the addition of the holidays version is equally fun and creative.  absolutely worth the cost.  the question is it worth the time that it will suck from your life?

price: $0.99/each

yep, welcome to the first ever, post-New Year top ten special surprise.  i had a couple extra things that i wanted to pass on to you before we got too far into 2011.

top ten_tv shows

ten | no ordinary family

its basically a live version of the incredibles.  a family gets super powers.  what i like most about it is michael chiklis’ character plays a father who really goes after trying to save and lead his family.  he definitely makes mistakes, but still continues to pursue his wife and lead his children.  plus, its superheroes, so i’m for sure going to like it.

nine | smallville

again, its superheroes.  this time its the superhero.  i’ve been watching all ten seasons of smallville and while i’m sad this is the last season, its definitely time.  he still isn’t flying, which is kind of ridiculous, but its bound to happen soon!

eight | the office

this season has redeemed the last few lackluster ones.  with dwight turning the tables on jim and playing the dominant prankster, the show feels fresh and fun again…and more importantly, funny!

seven | the amazing race

i’m addicted the the amazing race.

i’ve organized or helped lead five amazing races for our interns over the last five years, but i’d never really gotten into the show.  with em taking over the organizing for this year, we decided to watch this season to spark some ideas.

i’m now addicted.

not just with the show, but i think i’m addicted with wanting to be on the show. unfortunately, you must live in the states to apply.  sadness.  i am really plotting and trying to figure out how i can be on the show.  i’m even dreaming about it.

yeah, i’m addicted.

six | so you think you can dance

this is another show that i’d love to be on.  i know you’re laughing, but seriously, dance is amazing and i think i could hang with the hip-hop.

ok, i couldn’t, but this show always stirs me emotionally and is hugely motivating to dance.

five | the walking dead

again, zombies infect my top ten list.  i just love them.  what i love about this zombie show is that it doesn’t just fix on the zombies outside, it also focuses on the living dead inside.  not only do the protagonists face threats from the zombies, but they also face threats from the inside.  under the pressures of trying to survive, they can’t always trust each other.

great acting, great effects, and a perfect storyline make this a must see…if you can handle it.

four | 30 rock

its the most brilliantly written show on television.  so smart.  i laugh often and often i laugh late, which always makes me wonder how many jokes am i missing.  jack and liz have the best chemistry between two characters on television.

three | fringe

if any show replaces lost for me for sheer ingenuity, creativity, and must-see factor, its this one.  it has a great cast, great story-line, and amazing special effects.  if you’re missing lost, then start with season one and don’t stop until you’re caught up!

two | modern family

i laugh more in this show than in any other (maybe if i caught all the 30 rock jokes it’d be different).  amazingly unique characters and chemistry with the cast, highlighted, in my opinion, by the two of the youngest cast members, rico rodriguez (manny) and nolan gould (luke).

one | lost

its just simply the best show of our generation.  whether you stuck with it until the end or you liked the end (i didn’t), everyone watched it for awhile.  we all were drawn in to these unique characters, their histories, their futures, their sidewayses (?).  what is in the hatch? what is the black smoke? 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42. who are the others? what is the deal with walt? jack. kate. sawyer. jin. sun. the names, the numbers, the mystery.  we’ll all remember it…until we all walk into the mystical light. ;)

it should be noted that these movies are taken from movies i saw in 2010, not necessarily that they were released in 2010.

as with the top music post, please write in the comments what you’re favorite movies of the year were.

ten | avatar (imax 3-d)

it takes a lot to overcome bad acting and a predictable plot, but given the fact that i jerked my head out of the way of boulder during this movie, shows how amazing the visual effects were.  i’m thankful for my buddy joe who said, “if the acting and plot were great, then it would have been sensory and mental overload.”  so, thanks for the poor movie, so our minds could relax and just take in the majesty.

nine | brothers

toby mcguire turned in a chilling performance in this movie, which follows the all too plausible scenario of a man who thought dead returns to his family, which has moved on without him.  his mental instability and extreme reaction to “normal” life show us, sadly, the hidden life of what many of our boys experience when they return from their service.  powerful, emotional, and moving.

eight | the pacific

while not necessarily as gripping as band of brothers, the pacific tracks the lives of men as they experience the pacific theatre of world war two.  this ten-part series has a bit more of punch to it for me as both of my grandfathers served in the pacific.

seven | run baby run

gone baby gone is proof that ben affleck should stick with directing.  his debut in directing is fabulous and compelling and casey affleck proves again that he is a much better actor than his brother.  it raises questions about what is right and wrong and how does one decide which to pursue in complicated situations.  it takes black and white, throws them in a blender, and leaves us either searching endlessly trying to pull the two apart or forced to live with the grey mess that life often gives us.

six | scott pilgrim vs. the world

easily one of the most creative and fun movies of the year.  its one of those movies that you start by laying down and before the opening credits roll, your sitting up with a smile on your face blown away by the ingenuity.  tons of comic book and video game references make this movie a comic/video game nerds dream!

five | (500) days of summer

“this is not a love story”, the commentator declares to start the movie.  and it isn’t.  but, it sure feels like one for most of the time.  brilliantly written, great characters, and a unique storyline make this an endearing movie!

four | shutter island

leonardo dicaprio just doesn’t make bad movies anymore.  i say anymore, because i can’t stand titanic. but everything since then has been great.  not just good, but great.  and shutter island continues in this tradition.  a wandering, elusive tale of a man trying to come to grips with disaster in his own life while trying to solve the case of a missing person on an island which houses an insane asylum.  the ending will shock you and leave you guessing…kinda like another leo movie from this year…

three | precious

precious was a very difficult movie to watch.  it isn’t for the faint of heart.  i would not recommend it to everyone.

but, if you are ok watching a story that, unfortunately, is true to life and deals with issues that white, middle class American doesn’t like to acknowledge, then see this movie.

it deals with issues such as physical abuse, incest, and rape in a very real, yet not overly graphic way.  showing enough to get its point across, but not too much to make it irreverent.

but, if you can clean away the grime and see through the dirt, then what you’ll find is a beautifully creative movie about love, redemption, and perseverance.  precious (the girl) will grow on you and you’ll be rooting for her in the end.  you can’t help it really…

two | zombieland

this is another movie, like scott pilgrim, that from the beginning i was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what creatively awesome thing there were going to come up with next.  i laughed a ton in this movie and it is a zombie movie.  it couldn’t get much better than that…and then it did.  a cameo by bill murray (one of the greatest comedic minds of our time) playing himself sealed the deal.

one | inception

simply mind blowing.

leo turns in (once again) another brilliant performance and surprisingly another movie staring joseph gordon-levitt makes the top ten (500 days of summer is the other one).

any movie that causes me to question to just the reality within the movie, but then that reality as well, is great.  i love being spell-bound and taken on a ride that i don’t know where its going to end up.  inception does all that and more, leaving us questioning everything in the end.

please use the comment area below to let me know what your favorite albums were of 2010…i’m always looking for new music!

ten | Invented_jimmy eat world

emily is definitely the big Jimmy fan in our house, but I really enjoyed this album.  also, a good concert always helps make an album feel stronger.

nine | Rehab_lecrae

Christian rap doesn’t have the best reputation…and rightly so.  rap at its core is arrogant, hard, and antagonistic; attributes that aren’t exactly found in the sermon on the mount! that oxymoron coupled with the fact that there hasn’t been much talent or quality beats, means that Christian rap just hasn’t been good.

i’ve given different artists a shot over the years with very little success, but Lecrae is proving that he can hold his own.  evidence of this fact is that rehab spent a few weeks on the itunes top ten.  no small feat for a Christian rap artist.  the album has some great beats, solid theological lyrics, and an all-around great sound.

eight | more than conquerers ep_more than conquerers

i’m not sure how the boys from Jimmy Eat World will feel that the band who filled in last minute to open for them actually finds themselves ranking higher on my top ten.  (i’m sure they are all waiting on pins and needles for this post…)

these lads from belfast, thoroughly impressed us live and this short ep captures their sound nicely.  interesting lyrics and a funky, driving guitar sound are a sure bet to get yourself in my top ten!

seven | together_the new pornographers

this super-band makes some of the most playful music today.  ac newman’s lispy voice, coupled with the sweet sounds of neko case and kathryn calder, plus the few songs sung by dan bejar with his unorthodox vocals and cryptic lyrics make this band a powerhouse of lyricism and uniqueness.  i can listen to these guys during pretty much any season of life!

six | high violet_the national

Baritone, Matt Berninger, leads this band into a soundscape unlike any other band out there.  His booming voice and arrogant lyrics give the National their unique flavor.  Their albums are overpowering in sound and high violet continues this excellent tradition.

five | burn a quiet place down ep_my dead air

brothers josh and dan ballard of until june decided to record solo albums this year and the first one to be released makes me feel like this was a great decision.  my dead air is dan’s persona.  there is nothing dead about his dreamy and thoughtful lyrics.  the album has only been out for a month, but it has quickly become a favorite of both emily and mine, providing us with a sweet hiatus between unending Christmas music.

four | who are you_the technicolors

this album doesn’t sound like it came from the soul of a young 20-something.  it has maturity in both lyrics and musicianship of a much older and wiser sage.  the entire album takes you on a journey through the desert of loneliness and love.  i can’t wait for future projects from this up-and-coming artist.

downloadable:

three | the winter of mixed drinks_frightened rabbit

frightened rabbit continues to deliver stellar album after stellar album.  scott hutchison’s lyrics are still as strong as the midnight organ fight.  the Scottish brogue adds depth to their sound and fills in the very few holes in their sound…a sound that’s big, real big.  their passion that is evidently seen in concert can be felt and heard in every song.

downloadable:
_ swim until you can’t see land

two | infinite arms_band of horses

this is band of horses’ worst album.  yep, their worst album finds itself as the number two album of 2010 for me.  they are that good.  it should be said though, that this is em’s favorite album of theirs.

ben bridwell and gang continue to write exciting, guitar-driven, southern alt-rock/country music.  they produce amazing music video and are thrilling live.

nw apt. seems to be a retort to former boh founder mat brooke’s song southern glass house.  the ongoing rivalry between bridwell and brookes’s band grand archives provides an interesting drama as a backdrop to their music.

one | sigh no more_mumford and sons

i’m pretty crazy about rating music on itunes.  i rate every song.  i create smart playlists based off of genre and rating.  i have smart playlists of all five-star songs from every decade.  i love cataloguing.  and sigh no more by mumford & sons did something that has never been done by any other previous album…every song on the album received four or five stars.  every song.  not even my number one album of the 2000s, transatanticism (expo ’86 is only a three-star) did that.

the sound on this album is so fresh and haunting and fun.  not words that usually go together, but at one point you can be swept away by such a sweet song as winter winds and then be plunged into the depths of despair in white blank pages or thimshel.

speaking of thimshel, this album will forever be linked to east of eden.  i discovered this album during the summer thanks to my good friend, paul.  shortly thereafter i picked up eden.  the two sound like they were made for each other, but since eden was written in 1952, i have to ask, “was mumford & sons somehow inspired by steinbeck’s best?” there are songs that in themselves sound like the landscape of the salinas valley as described by steinbeck, lyrics that seem to match scenes from the novel, and then there’s the word…thimshel, thou mayest.  it is the word of eden.  it is central to the theme of the story and key to a few of the stories most poignant moments and it is the name of one of the songs on the album.

maybe its all just coincidence, but regardless, my favorite novel and my favorite album of 2010 will forever be linked.

2010 was a bad year for reading for me.  i only read nineteen books which is far fewer than i normally read.  nineteen may sound like a lot, but when you’re trying to make a top ten that means that books from the lower half of the spectrum make the top ten…i’m not a fan of that! :)

i also didn’t feel like the quality of books was that high.  in comparison, i don’t think books 5-10 would’ve made last years rankings.  with that being said, though, i did read one of my favorite books of all time this year.  its probably a top five book of all time! scroll to number one if you don’t have the patience to read through the rest to see what that book is!

ten | when people are big and God is small_edward t. welch

this book came at the right time for me.  after a busy summer and right as i went on my prayer retreat, this book definitely shaped the way i thought and prayed during that time.  i am so swayed by the opinion and concern of others.  we often say, “love God, love people” is the way to live, but i realize that i put the people before God often.  this book helped put some of that in perspective as well as identifying why i do that.

nine | freakonomics_steven d levitt & stephen j dubner

timing may be the only thing separating this book from being swapped with the number five book.  i read this one second, so some of the thoughts weren’t as fresh, but they were still provocative.  i love questioning the validity of conventional wisdom and developing scientific/economic tool for discovery what is (or is not) true about what we believe.

my favorite studies were the ones on if teachers were changing their students answers to give them high scores on standardized testing and whether real estate agents could be trusted  to sell your house for as much as they sell their own.

eight | blockade billy_stephen king

even a bad Stephen King book is usually going to make the top ten for me.  he writes brilliant characters and takes the time to adequately develop a setting and plot.  regardless of how he is branded as a horror novelist, he is one of our generations best writers.  (for those of you who are doubting, ask yourself if you enjoyed movies like stand by me, the shawshank redemption, and the green mile…yep, they’re all stephen king books!)

anyways, blockade billy is about a baseball player who is a little messed up in the head.  i love baseball.

seven | have a little faith_mitch albom

i remember when my friend josh told me to read tuesdays with morrie.  i asked him who wrote it and he said “mitch albom”.  i replied “the sports guy?”

mitch albom has a magical way of relaying a story of real life that makes you care deeply about the characters and their situation.  he is always found in his books, but it is the people around him who are highlighted.

have a little faith chronicles mitch’s relationship with the rabbi of his youth and the life of a charismatic preacher in a poor neighborhood in detroit.  two men who otherwise never would’ve been known by the likes of millions are shown to us all as men who moved people.  with glory  so easily given to athletes, musicians, and entertainers, its nice to see men who sacrificed everything for their faith communities being lifted up a little bit.

six | breaking the missional code_ed stetzer & david putman

this last year had me reading quite a few books about church planting and living on mission.  because of my relationship with a few different church planters and an increase in church planting world-wide, i felt like a few of the books weren’t that fresh, but breaking the code was very inspiring and helpful in regards to church planting.  i’m not a church planter, but this book sparked that desire a little and also helped me to think about how to live and love in a community regardless of whether or not i’m planting a church or not.

five | the tipping point_malcolm gladwell

its hard to separate this book too much from freakonomics in that they both deal with looking sideways at problems or conventional wisdom and seeking the truth in otherwise ordinary problems.

the big takeaway from this book was to look and see why do things move? are there problems within our ministry here that i need to look at a different way in trying to solve them? are there different ways to get the ministry to move forward than the conventional way that we’ve been trying already? who are the people we need to make that happen?

four | unchristian_dave kinnamon & gabe lyons

if there was a theme in my reading this year, then it was research non-fiction.  freakonomics, the tipping point, and now unchristian.  they all used research to try to solve their questions.

in unchristian, kinnaman & lyons ask the question, “how do the non-churched or non-Christian young people view Christians and the Church?” they came up with six general impressions that young people have about God’s people.  but they don’t just leave it at that.  they then look at why that is the perspective, what we’ve done to perpetuate that believe and what we need to do either to change the perspective, if its not how Christ would live, or how to communicate Christ’s message better, so that it isn’t lost in so-called insensitivities.

three | preparing for jesus_walter wangerin

walter wangerin is a brilliant Christian author.  i read his book paul probably ten years ago and i loved it.  he put paul’s life into chronological order (as best he could) and brought humanity to the man who wrote much of the new testament.  he does the same in preparing for Jesus, but on a smaller scale as he gives us fresh insight into the life of those closest to Jesus during the time of His birth.  he manages to show Christ in His humanity more clearly than anything i’ve read before, while continually pointing us to His glory as God’s Son.

definitely buy it and read it next advent!

two | the prodigal god_timothy keller

timothy keller is one of the most brilliant Christian minds of our age.  Reasons for God was a top five book last year and he finds himself near the top again as he helps us to look at the story of the Prodigal Son with new eyes.  his fresh look at one of Jesus’ most well-known parables, causes to rethink who the story is really about and how this story is a much more phenomenal characterization of God’s love for us than our old understanding of the story.

one | east of eden_john steinbeck

i first picked up east of eden from the bookshelf of my friends, brooke and johnny after stopping in slovenia on our way back from croatia in august of 2009. i only read the first page, but i knew that it would be a book that i would love.  i then purchased it from a used bookstore in flagstaff when we were with em’s family last fall.  but, for whatever reason, i didn’t pick the book up to read it until august.  fortune or fate or chance or whatever, led me to read this as i was also discovering one of the best albums of the year (read tomorrow’s post to discover which album).  the two, book and album, are now forever connect…so much so that i even googled to see if the album was inspired by the book.  i digress…

i have always been fascinated by steinbeck.  he is easily one of the best writers of the 20th Century.  i always say you can tell is an author is good if they can make you care about something that you never cared about before.  my illustration of this is grapes of wrath.  i have very little, if any, interest in great depression/dust bowl America.  i love american history, but i probably care the least about this time period.  yet, grapes was compelling and brilliant.

so what about eden? it takes all the brilliant writing and imagery from grapes and puts it into storyline and plot that i cared for deeply.  as i walked decade by decade with the trasks and hamilton families, my love (and hatred) for them grew deeper and stronger.  i was grieved when death entered the story,  desperate when relationships ended, shocked when a gun is fired, overjoyed by the care of a chinaman, and provoked to thought throughout the entire novel.

it really is one of the best novels of all-time.

these are the top ten pictures that were either taken or edited by me.  i’m glad that i will be able to highlight the talent of a couple awesome women in this post!

this isn’t so much a ranking of verses in regards to which ones are better, but more about which verses spoke to me most in this past year.

normally, i’d provide some commentary, but i’ll let the verses speak for themselves.

additionally, i’d love to hear what verses spoke to you this year.  post a comment with what verse(s) impacted you this year.

ten | romans 13.11-14

besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep.  for salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.  the night is far gone; the day is at hand.  so then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.  let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy.  but put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

nine | mark 2.17

and when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.  i came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

eight | psalm 139.23-24

search me, o God, and know my heart! try me, and know my thoughts! and see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!

seven | first timothy 1.5

the aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.

six | romans 12.1-2

i appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, hole and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.  do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, that is good and acceptable and perfect.

five | genesis 2.24

therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

four | galatians 1.10

for am i now seeking the approval of man, or of God? or am i trying to please man? if i were still trying to please man, i would not be a servant of Christ.

three | romans 13.5-6

one person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike.  each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.  the one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord.  the one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God.

two | philippians 2.1-11

so if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.  do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.  let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.  have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.  and being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.  therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

one | proverbs 29.25

the fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.
